Shoes for Shooting | Wedding and Portrait Photographers Recommend their Favorite Footwear

As wedding season kicks into high gear, I felt like I needed to address a topic that’s critical to our industry and close to my heart.

Shoes.

I know, there’s probably someone out there thinking, “Ugh, don’t trivialize my art and my career by talking about something as superficial as shoes!” That person probably hasn’t ever climbed a fence to get the perfect angle for a portrait or shot an eight-hour wedding at four different locations. The right shoes are important. So in the interest of podiatry, and not because I wanted to go online-shoe-shopping and call it “work,” I polled a few of my photografriends and asked them what they like to wear while shooting. Here’s the roundup. (Click the shoes for shopping info.)

Crocs Mary Janes
RECOMMENDED BY: Me!

After rejecting Crocs for years, I saw another photog wearing a pair that didn’t look too hideous, so I decided to give them a go. OMG, they’re magical. I get it now. I shoot 90% of my weddings on the beach, and it takes about three seconds to shake the sand out of these. They’re warm enough for winter, ventilated for summer, and have enough grip for climbing on slippery jetties. And if I wade in the ocean, they’re dry again in 10 minutes. Love.

My current pair has been discontinued and replaced with this version.

Converse All-Stars
RECOMMENDED BY: Jennifer at JellyBean Pictures in Westchester, New York

Jennifer has worn Converse on every single shoot – they’re unconventional (like her) and comfy enough for her high-energy shooting style. “Growing up, all the bands wore them, and I so wanted to be a rock star,” she says. “I have a mix of legit All-Stars and Target One Star’s, and my absolute favorite pair are from the Converse store in London — green suede with yellow star and stripe.”

Sanuk Athena
RECOMMENDED BY: Carolina at Walk with Me Photography in Port Ewen, New York

Carolina does lifestyle photography, which means she’s usually moving at the warp-speed of a toddler. “As an on-location shooter, I need shoes that have the support of sneakers and the flexibility of ballet flats,” she says. This is her pair of choice.

Yosi Samra ballet slippers
RECOMMENDED BY: Tirzah at Photography by Tirzah in Salem, Oregon

“Their flats are perfect for a wedding — sooo comfy, like being barefoot,” she says.

Reef Sandy flip-flops
RECOMMENDED BY: Jennifer at Sweet Pea Pictures in Raleigh, North Carolina

Jennifer shoots outside in balmy NC summers, so she swears by flip-flops — and won’t wear any brand but Reefs. “There’s a joke in the south that it’s it’s above 32 degrees, it’s flip-flop weather,” she says. “I’ve seriously worn these bad boys to the point of the soles being 1/2-inch thin.”

Hunter Rubber Rain Boots
RECOMMENDED BY: Shannon at Cuddlebug Captures in Vancouver, British Columbia

On the other end of the weather spectrum, Shannon shoots in rainy Vancouver, so Hunter boots are perfect for keeping her feet warm and dry even when her subjects aren’t:)“They’re more comfortable than tennis shoes,” she says. “I’m so glad I live in a place where it rains all the time so I can wear them almost every day during the winter. I seriously walk miles at a time with zero blisters.”

Katie + Bryan | Shadowbrook | Jersey Shore Wedding Photography

I knew Katie and Bryan’s wedding was going to be a good time, because I had already worked with Katie’s family before — she was the maid of honor in her brother’s wedding in December. It was fun to see everyone again, and after torturing Angela and Michael in 38-degree weather on the beach, I got to torture Katie and Bryan with triple-digit heat. Hey, variety is the spice of life:)

Here are a few highlights from the day. Okay, maybe “a few” isn’t the right choice of words. There are A LOT of photos here. Here we go!

I just love this shot.

We headed outside for some portraits in their gorgeous yard…

…then it was off to Christ Church in Shrewsbury for the ceremony!

After Katie and Bryan made it official, we headed to the amazing Shadowbrook estate right up the road.

The poor flower girl got stung by a mean wasp-or-bee TWICE while we were shooting. Luckily she’s a champion and still managed to turn on the smiles for the camera.

Fun fact. Because it was so insanely hot (with approximately 10000% humidity) I didn’t want to make Katie and Bryan run around too much. So for this next batch of images, they stood in one spot while I ran in a circle around them.

…and you know what? They’re some of my all-time favorite photos.

A quick shot of the rings, and then it was time for cocktail hour!

And finally, we headed inside to the reception.

The heat was intense, but at least THIS waited until we were safely inside! This was taken at 7 p.m. in mid-summer, if you need an idea of how wicked it was. Half the staff was crowded around the window taking camera-phone pics just in case we all ended up in Oz.

The bridesmaids serenaded me with “Some Nights” by Fun, which happens to be my favorite late-night editing song of the moment. Yippee!

As you can see, everybody was very boring and no one had any fun at all:)

And last but not least, the cake cutting!

Katie and Bryan, thanks for asking me to capture another awesome wedding with your family!:)

Lora + Charles | Ocean City Boardwalk | Jersey Shore Wedding Photographer

Usually, the bride’s house is a flurry of activity in the hours before a wedding. So I was surprised when I walked into Lora’s house and found her chillin’ on the couch — seriously, there’s no other word for it besides chillin’ — snapping camera-phone pics of her already-dressed bridesmaids. Oh, and her wedding dress was hung in the perfect spot on the window with soft light beaming in behind it. (And you should’ve seen the look on the priest’s face when the limo rolled up 20 minutes before the ceremony was scheduled to start. “The BRIDE is EARLY?!” he asked.)

Anyway. Even beyond being the most insanely prepared newlyweds-to-be in history, Lora and Charles were awesome to work with. They did a fun “sort-of-first-look” before the wedding, snapping a few pics together without actually seeing each other. Then it was off to the ceremony at Our Lady of Sorrows in Linwood, followed by photos on the beach and boardwalk in Ocean City, then back to the Blue Heron Pines Golf Club in Egg Harbor City for the reception. Yep, you need to be pretty organized to pull that schedule off.

A few favorites from the day…

Here are the “no first look” shots…:)

Gorgeous lighting in this church — dark in the pews, skylight over the altar.

Off to the O.C. boardwalk!

Everyone braved the midday sun (it was HOT!) for some fun photos on the beach…

…then back to the boardwalk for a few last shots…

…before heading to the reception.

Love these sparkler shots!

Thanks for choosing me to shoot your wedding, Lora and Charles!:)

Leslie + Joe | McLoone’s Pier House, Long Branch, NJ | Jersey Shore Wedding Photography

Leslie and Joe got married at the gorgeous McLoone’s Pier House right in the middle of this summer’s seemingly never-ending heat wave. I think I drank about 15 glasses of water that day, but seriously — there’s no better place to spend a sweltering summer day than the Jersey Shore. And it didn’t hurt that this was a fun group to hang out with. Here are a few favorites.

I was so excited when I spotted this lifeguard chair across the beach. I think the bridal party thought I was nuts, but I knew it would make the perfect location.

Loved the details at the reception. Every time I thought they were done adding cool beachy artifacts to the welcome table, Leslie would say, “No, wait…there’s more!”

Unfortunately, after an long week of last-minute planning, the heat took its toll and Leslie wound up leaving the reception early to visit the ER! But she still managed a smile for this shot — she’s sipping a Gatorade in a back room of the venue, where they set up a makeshift sweetheart table for her to cool off. Talk about finding the humor in any situation:)

Even though the guests of honor had to take a slight detour, the party kept going.

The first dancing shot makes me laugh every time — the setup, the dip, and the crash. They were having so much fun.

Leslie and Joe, thanks so much for choosing me to shoot your wedding! Hope you love the photos as much as I do:)

Tom + Leah | Medford NJ Engagement Session

I love weddings. I suppose that’s a good trait for a wedding photographer to have. But it also means I constantly have to give myself little reminders like, “Don’t cry at the toast!” and “Step away from the hors d’oeuvres!” and “No one wants to see your Usher moves!”

But at Tom and Leah’s wedding, I get to be a guest. Yay! Tom’s my brother-in-law, and Leah’s my almost-sister-in-law, which means my only job at their wedding is not to act like a total Uncle Bob:)I can’t wait. (In fact, I have four weddings in the family this year — I am so going to eat my weight in appetizers.)

Anyway. Tom and Leah needed a couple of photos for their wedding invitations, and their actual engagement session isn’t until the spring, so we set out to get a shot or two. And of course I went overboard and it became sort of a mini-engagement-session. Like an appetizer. These are the cocktail franks to their engagement session!

Okay, I’ll stop the food analogies and get to the photos.

Wardrobe change! Location change!

Okay, things got carried away for a sec…literally…
